About posts

Vinyl fencing comprises a small, but significant part of the outdoor products market. More commonly, fences are fabricated of metal or wood. Vinyl fences mimic the look of a whitewashed wooden fence. If one still desires a white picket fence, they can now achieve that dream with either wood or vinyl.

Vinyl posts are reinforced on the inside with either metal or wood. The top of the post can be embellished with one of many different styles of post caps. Gothic is popular, but there are other designs such as the Newell queen or king cap. There are also illuminated post caps that are equipped with lights to light your way in the dark and provide extra security you're. Illuminated post caps are available in models that require wiring to an electrical circuit, while other models use solar cells to capture sunlight. The solar cells gather energy during the day and automatically light up in the evening.

Stylized post caps come in horse head designs and other unusual forms. A common practice is to dress the corners, gates and gate posts and with fanciful caps, and use more low-profile flat caps on the line posts. All of these vinyl post caps should withstand weather better than aluminum or wooden post caps.

Metal finishes can be damaged and expose the metal beneath to the elements. Rust soon develops and can weaken the post. Wood protectants, such as paints and stains can be scratched and allow water to seep into the unprotected areas of the fence. Swelling and warping can occur and even allow insects to invade the wood. With vinyl, however, these problems are eliminated.
