Livestock fencing

About livestock fencing

For livestock fencing to be effective, it must create a barrier that animals will respect and avoid. There are a number of ways to accomplish this, depending on your budget and the type of fencing you prefer. The most effective livestock fencing will be a visual, mental, and physical barrier for your animals.

For a fence to form a visual barrier, it is important that your animals can see it clearly at all times. For this reason, a portion of the fence should be at eye level with your animals. Studies have shown that animals perceive natural colors, including brown, green, and white best, especially if they are frightened.

Creating a mental barrier with your livestock fencing is also important. A horse can be lead around the perimeter of the fence so it knows the boundary. Using an electric fence also creates an effective mental barrier. Although they will not harm your animals, the shocks administered by these fences are painful and teach the animal to avoid these areas.

Finally, your livestock fencing must be capable of containing the animals, even if they have been frightened enough to forget the barrier and run into the fence. Livestock fences must be strong, and not injure the animal. Look for fencing that is flexible and shock absorbent, which are best at withstanding the impact of an animal.
